Sierra Leone has officially confirmed a measles outbreak following the detection of 41 cases across eight districts between January and April 2026, according to the National Public Health Agency and the Ministry of Health.
Reports indicate that the outbreak currently has a national test positivity rate of 75%, raising concerns among health officials as authorities continue monitoring the spread of the disease.
Western Area Urban has emerged as the most affected district, recording the highest number of confirmed cases. Health authorities disclosed that 15 cases have been identified in the district, including nine new infections reported in April alone.
Officials say the recent increase in cases points to active community transmission in Freetown and surrounding areas, prompting renewed public health concerns.
The government is now urging citizens to stay alert and take preventive measures seriously. Parents and guardians are being encouraged to ensure children receive their routine vaccinations and immediately report any suspected measles symptoms to nearby health facilities.
Health authorities continue surveillance and response efforts as measures are being strengthened to prevent additional spread.
Salonegist will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
